I just listened to this online and it sounds like Maria is the one with the issue. Ian has been friends with Krista for 10 years and Maria needs to deal with that or move on. She has known about Krista the entire relationship and I know exactly what Ian is talking about when he says bringing up Krista's name to Maria just starts a fight. Being with a jelous partner is very difficult and it strains the relationship. Maybe the best thing for them is to not be together....or Maria needs to grow up and be an adult and deal with the fact that her boyfriend has a long-term female friend. If she doesn't trust him now, she'll never trust him.
I think he was being honest, but why can't he bring Krista over to the house and have a barbecue where Maria is part of the friendship. I do understand that he has been friends with Krista for 10 years, but as someone who has been married for 30 years, it is not cool to take another woman out for dinner. But after this phone call, i think Maria has lost her boyfriend. Oh Well !!!!!! :)
